Hi. It can be frustrating not being able to. Edit natively within InDesign. However there is a very good reason for it. InDesign is made specifically for layout. What you see on screen are just generated previews. In larger documents the file can habe hundred or sometimes thousands if links inside. The files would be so large you couldn't work on them. By keeping all of the photo editing to outside software it allows for a lot more freedom and speed in laying out your pages.

I'm not sure which version you are using, but I am several versions back. The version I am using is CS5.5 which does not allow you to edit an image much beyond cropping, repositioning, and replacing the image. To actually edit an image you would definitely want to use Photoshop (for photos) or Adobe Illustrator (for graphics), then replace the image within the InDesign document. I hope that helps.
