   Contractor of record (CoR) software helps businesses engage, manage, and pay contractors across country borders through an intermediary legal arrangement. Companies use this software to avoid setting up local legal entities, reduce administrative and legal burden, and attract skilled workers for tech, creative industries, gaming, and industrial settings. CoR platforms help organizations hire, sign agreements, and manage the payment process and invoices.

Multiple departments use contractor of record software, including legal, HR, and talent acquisition, to streamline documentation and assist with compliance issues. CoR software also addresses compliance-sensitive areas such as intellectual property (IP) rights, non-disclosure agreements (NDA), and, in some cases, worker misclassification risk. Some CoR products also act as intermediaries if disputes arise between the client and contractor.

There are other legal arrangements that allow employers to hire workers full-time, including an [employer of record](https://www.g2.com/categories/employer-of-record-eor) in which the organization serves as the de facto employer, or a [professional employer organization (PEO) provider](https://www.g2.com/categories/peo-providers) in which the employer and organization are co-employers. By contrast, CoR software assists in hiring contract workers across borders. Companies with a smaller number of contractors, or freelance workers within the same country, may choose to use [contractor management](https://www.g2.com/categories/contractor-management) or [contractor payment software](https://www.g2.com/categories/contractor-payments). However, CoR assists with a higher volume of workers who are hired across borders.
